Neal Adams convention sketch from the 1978 San Diego Comicon. I picked a character I had never seen Adams portray; Adam Strange. Mr Adams drew the figure, and it was fantastic. But I asked him to add some background details - "space stuff". He didn't seem to mind, and created this background.

This is very unique piece. I've never seen Adams do this character; have you? I've seen Mr Adams at several other conventions over the years, and he put much more time into his sketches - much more careful detail - at this 1978 convention than I've ever seen since. He hadn't yet developed his quick "convention sketch" style.

He spent time making a pencil sketch first, which you still see. He doesn't usually do that any more.

Then he used 3 different pens for different line widths. Much more detail than you see in more recent convention sketches. This is not your average Neal Adams convention sketch - not just another Batman or Superman - it's truly one-of-a-kind. The drawing is on a page from a good quality sketch book, with perforated left edge where the page was removed from the pad. I've had it framed at a local shop the I've used many times before - they do good work.

Rather than hiding the left edge with a matte, I've put the piece in a black wooden frame, with a plain black matte as background, which really makes it all the more unique. It looks like a piece of art - like a Michelangelo sketch.

Also included is a photo of Neal Adams actually creating the drawing! You can easily recognize him, and you can clearly see the art that he's working on. This adds another unique dimension to the piece. The item "Neal Adams original art Adam Strange San Diego Comicon 1978" is in sale since Saturday, October 23, 2021.
