18X23 INCHES, AMAZING ORIGINAL ART BY "GENE SMITH". PRELIMINARY SKETCHES, ETC ON REVERSE. UNSURE IF THIS WAS EVER PUBLISHED, PENCILLED EARLIER, INKED AND FINISHED IN 1995.
"Gene Smith" was a WW2 and Korea Air Force veteran, later an accomplished fine artist and teacher. This is part of an archive his wife kept after his death. She could not absolutely confirm that they were published, so neither can I. She says that some were pencilled early and inked at a later date, but that most are contemporaneous with his service.
He's clearly influenced by Caniff, but you can see his style evolve from a 40's aesthetic to the 50's. There are some later pieces in the archive, maybe 60's/70's? I've been asked not to reveal his real name and I have to honor the wife's wishes. ALSO SEEN ON COMIC ART FANS, GALLERY: JUNK CULTURE COMIC ART.
