The Incredible Hulk 298 page 17 original comic art Sal Buscema, Gerry Talaoc. Nightmare is attacking each of Dr. Stranges Defender allies in their dreams, and the suggestions Nightmare has planted in Hulks subconscious have freed him from restraint. The art on this Bronze Age page reflects that unrestrained rage. As Shield tries to capture Hulk, people and objects are breaking through panel boundaries all over!

Hulk tosses a power company van one-handed at the Shield planes and it looks like its leaving the page. And of course the great irony of the page is that what set the Hulk off was his desire for a happy life with Kate Waynesboro, and shes with the Shield force hes attacking! The dialogue are all paste-ups and the bottom one is missing. There is whiteout used for artistic effect throughout the cream-colored page. This is original comic art physically drawn and inked.

Please note, that as comic art pages were created in the production of a periodical magazine, a collaborative effort was necessary to take any page from conception to publication. Its often unappreciated that they were not static pieces of art, but changing process documents in service to the larger goal.

Sometimes the artists choices created an impermanence. Pages were drawn with or on materials that faded or darkened over time. Small or elaborate collages utilized fragile cutouts from other periodical media with adhesives that dont hold up over time.

Previously-drawn images were copied onto different quality materials and re-used in manual paste-ups by the artist. There were intentional procedural changes, as when corners were removed at the image shoot. Pages were marked up, annotated during editorial, and manually corrected, sometimes with an exacto knife and tape. They also may have been glued, stamped, hole-punched, pinned up, or otherwise manipulated. At other times, the changes were unintentional as when chemicals in the printing process spilled on the page or tape stains were left on the borders. As more of the creative and publication practice moves fully into the digital world, not only will this kind of standalone physical art disappear, but these valuable artifacts will as well.

And that is all the reason to love them more. Please review the accompanying images carefully.
